Where Real Chickens are Born!

Faithful Hatchery is where real chickens are born! Committed to excellence, and learning on the job, Faithful Hatchery has grown and become a valuable asset to large scale farmers, and families looking to raise a few chickens to produce eggs for personal use.

The History of Faithful Hatchery

Faithful Hatchery began in 2014, Marko van der Merwe and Dawie Robbertze concluded a partnership agreement and started to farm with chickens. They had 4 laying hens, built a chicken coop for them and were in business. They mainly sold eggs for table use and bought feed from the local feed store.

Very quickly it dawned on them just how hard farming actually was. Within the first month they had to raise their egg prices by 20% and cut feed costs by 10%. They have just entered into a perfectly competitive market. The future was looking grim. Despite all the difficulties, this small partnership grew to 60 laying hens. The market was still tough but they managed to sell to a few friends who were passionate about organic eggs.

After Dawie sold his shares and Marko moved away, the farm practically closed.

The Future of Faithful Hatchery

The dream of being the place where real chickens are born was not over yet… A year later, Marko returned to farming, along with a close friend, Jeandre Sylvester. This time, they began with Boschvelders instead of Amberlinks. They bought 15 layers and one rooster and built a 42 egg manual incubator. The incubator failed to hatch the eggs 3 times in a row and the new partnership was almost discouraged. With influence from the outside, the partners were encouraged to try just one more time and then buy an incubator. They carefully placed 42 eggs into the incubator, turned the eggs 3 times per day for 18 days by hand. Waiting 3 more days hoping for a miracle…

On a bright Saturday morning in May, the first egg began to crack. Others followed closely behind. Excitement filled the air. In the next few hours 34 chicks hatched, an astounding 81% for a homemade incubator that failed 3 times previously. This incubator has so far hatched over 150 chicks.

Now Faithful Hatchery has been registered and the legacy continues. Faithful Hatchery can be found on Facebook, and runs an extensive online storeFaithful Hatchery has a brand that has been tried and tested and remains an excellent producer and supplier to novice and professional chicken farmers.
